Estimates for England, Wales & Northern Ireland — Scottish income tax bands differ. Figures are a guide only, calculated on an annual basis, and don't cover every personal circumstance (other income, reliefs, pensions, benefits in kind, marriage allowance, etc.). Always confirm your position at gov.uk or with your accountant.

How your take-home is worked out

Everyone gets a £12,570 personal allowance (tax-free), then income tax at 20% up to £50,270, 40% up to £125,140 and 45% above. If you earn over £100,000 the allowance tapers away — lost entirely by £125,140, which is why that band carries an effective 60% rate. On top sits employee National Insurance at 8% between £12,570 and £50,270, then 2%. Student loan repayments, if any, come off separately as 9% (or 6% for a postgraduate loan) of income above your plan's threshold.

Thresholds are frozen for both years, so a pay rise can quietly move more of your income into a higher band — worth checking against both tax years above.
