When is the first MTD for Income Tax quarterly update due?
The first quarter (Q1) covers 6 April to 5 July and must be submitted to HMRC by 7 August. Quarterly updates are cumulative, so a small error is corrected in the next quarter.
Who has to file MTD for Income Tax from April 2026?
Self-employed people and landlords with gross qualifying income over £50,000 must follow MTD for Income Tax from 6 April 2026. The threshold drops to £30,000 in April 2027 and £20,000 in April 2028.
What happens if I miss the 7 August deadline?
MTD uses a points-based penalty system — a missed submission earns a point, with a financial penalty only once you reach the threshold for your filing frequency. The best move is to file as soon as possible; ThisQuarter can get you submitted the same day.
How quickly can I get set up?
Most people are set up and filed in an afternoon: connect to HMRC on its own secure login, enter or import your figures, review, and submit. This week we're offering free hands-on setup to walk you through your first submission.
Don't leave Q1 to the last day.
